SCAR ID

This installation was first exhibited at Massachusetts College of Art and Design’s All School Show in 2018. This piece has two components: a scanner to trigger video play and a screen projection that displays the video.

"Scar ID" is an interactive installation that explores immigrant entry to the U.S. during the tuberculosis era. Both the smallpox and BCG vaccines left permanent scars on the upper arm, but only the BCG vaccine was administered and required for immigrants entering the U.S. This scar became a symbol of foreignness for first-generation Americans, while also fostering solidarity among immigrants.
